Means tests for different types of care

If you are moving in to a care home and you have more than £23,250 in savings then you will typically have to pay for all of the cost of the care home.

If you have less than this amount then you may have to pay some or none of the amount. This threshold does include the value of your home, unless your partner or another dependant still lives there.

You can be charged for home care services if you also have more savings than £23,250.

Once again, you may have to pay a small amount or nothing if your savings are below this amount. Another thing to note is that the value of your home is not taken in to account when working out how much you have to pay.

The above amount quoted in this article is the toehold amount for England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland do differ and so you should research these amounts if you are unsure of them.

You can contact your local authority and ask them about the amount of assets and savings and they will be able to help you.
