Local authority funding for care costs

If you need support for day to day tasks then your local authority might be able to help with the cost of care. How much money you will receive from your local authority will depend on your needs and how much you can afford to pay.

Before you can receive any help with the payments towards your care, you have to have a care assessment. This is done by the social services department of your local council and it is to see whether you will benefit from professional care services.

If it is decided that you need care then you will then have to have a financial assessment, this is also known as a means test.

The means test will let the council know how much you need to pay for the care that they provide, if anything.

Just remember, just because they are providing the care, it doesn't mean that you do not get a choice in the care that you receive. They will let you know the options that are open to you and then you can decide which ones to use.

The services that they can provide include; meals, carers, transport, home modifications and equipment that may help you to complete everyday tasks.

Some services are provided for free from some council's. But as all councils are a little different it is worth doing some research into this matter for yourself.
